4 top tips for mowing the lawn

Before we get into our month by month lawn care calendar, there are some year-round lawn maintenance tips to keep your garden looking fresh no matter the season. So, whether it’s a quick tidy-up after holiday or figuring out the best way cut long grass, these year-round lawn maintenance tips will hopefully ensure that the grass is never greener on the other side!

1. Get the right grass height

As tempting as it may be to cut the grass as low as possible to delay the next time you need to mow the lawn, your lawn will benefit from being cut at the right height. As a rule of thumb, you should cut the grass to a height of around 2.5–4cm tall. However, with grass that gets more wear, from kids playing football or dogs getting their midday zoomies, it’s safe to mow the lawn to around 4-5cm. In areas covered by shade, you can cut the grass to an even longer length, between 7cm-8cm is ideal. But do keep in mind if you are ‘scalping’ your lawn – mowing the lawn significantly lower to remove winter build up – you may need to raise the mowing height as these areas are often mossy and heavily weeded.

In any case, you should avoid removing more than one-third of the grass’ length at one time, as this has potential to stunt growth. You can use adaptable mowers, like our Gtech cordless lawnmower, to adapt to lawn thickness and mow the lawn to the perfect height every time!

TOP TIP: The best way to cut long grass to the right height is to first chop off around half of the height with a cordless grass trimmer first. Going right in with mowing the lawn can block the lawnmowers blades.

2. Service your lawnmower regularly

To cut the grass efficiently and give it that professional garden look, your lawnmower needs to be fully serviced – but what does this entail? Firstly, the lawnmower blades need to be sharp. Chipped or blunted blades can damage and tear the grass, making mowing the lawn more difficult. Be sure you have a lawnmower with durable blades, like our carbon steel blades, for example! You’ll also need to check the engine isn’t blocked by stray clippings and is topped up with fuel. Of course, this isn’t a concern if you cut the grass with a cordless electric lawnmower as there are no petrol or cords to deal with!

3. Trim to the edge

When it comes to lawn maintenance, it’s all about the little things. Trimming the edge of your garden goes a long way to keeping the whole lawn healthy and fresh. So, to keep your garden neat, take the time to trim the edges using a half-moon edger. You’ll also need to trim any overhanging blades of grass once you’ve finished mowing the lawn too. For simplicity, try to find a lawnmower with wide cutting blades that can do most of the edge trimming for you. You can also try out our cordless grass trimmer to rid your garden of untidy blades of grass.

TOP TIP: You can tell cutting blades need sharpening if they leave a silver sheen on the grass or there’s a frayed look after mowing the lawn.

4. Listen to the weather forecast

Noticed the neighbours seem to only mow their lawn on sunny days? Well, there is a reason: dry ground means the mower is less likely to smear the soil, leading to a cleaner cut. Wet clippings also tend to clump together, causing mowing speeds to slow. You should pay special attention to the outdoor temperature before cutting the grass as well. If it’s too cold (below 5°C) cutting the grass can stunt growth, or too hot (more than 20°C) you run the risk of preventing your lawn from recovering from draught.

The cold and damp months of autumn and winter provide the perfect opportunity for rest from cutting the grass, instead of constantly worrying about lawn maintenance and sowing new grass seeds. In terms of growth, this tends to slow down in winter, so you can dedicate some time to more general lawn maintenance. For example, leaves and debris can gather quite quickly in the colder months, so spend some time sweeping and clearing up with a leaf blower to keep your garden tidy.
You can also take this time to aerate – putting small holes in the grass - to allow water to seep into the soil and grass roots. Aerating helps seeds to germinate, which is ideal in autumn, when the increase in rainfall and mild weather create the perfect sowing conditions.

Top tips for mowing the lawn in spring & summer

As the sun comes out with the spring and summer months, it’s time to begin crucial lawn maintenance to nurture your lawn after the damp and frost of autumn and winter.
Firstly, assess your lawn and look to remedy any problem areas that may have cropped up, such as diseased patches or areas affected by pests. Trimming hedges and weed control are also absolute musts for spring garden maintenance.  Essential lawn maintenance like this will keep your garden healthy as we prep for the warmer months.
With lawn maintenance out the way, spring brings in grass cutting season. For the first cut of spring, use the highest height setting on your lawnmower, and gradually reduce this to your desired height over the subsequent weeks Then, at the height of summer, you’ll want to mow your lawn at least every two weeks (going up to once a week if growth spikes). Additionally, July and August offer a great opportunity to re-evaluate where further lawn treatment is required with a top up of lawn food and weed control.
